What Is a Prompt?
A prompt is simply the instruction or input you provide to an AI system.
Instead of asking:Aobokwe Modibane
"Write me a marketing plan."
you can provide context, a specific objective, constraints, your target audience, and the format you want.
For example:
"Create a 30-day marketing plan for a small online clothing store targeting South African university students. Focus on Instagram and TikTok. Provide the plan as a weekly table with content ideas, objectives, and calls to action."
The second prompt gives the AI much more information to work with.
Give AI Context
Context tells AI what situation it is working within.
Instead of saying:
"Write an email."
tell it:
"I run a small consulting business and need to follow up with a potential client who requested a quotation last week."
The additional context helps the AI understand the purpose behind the task.
Define the Desired Output
Don't make AI guess what the final answer should look like.
Tell it whether you want:

A short summary
You can also specify the desired tone, length, audience, and level of detail.
Use Iteration
Your first prompt doesn't need to be perfect.
One of the most effective ways to work with AI is to treat the conversation as an iterative process.
You might ask AI to create a first draft, then tell it:
"Make this more concise."
Then:
"Make the tone more professional."
Then:
"Add three practical examples."
Then:
"Rewrite it for someone with no technical knowledge."
Each instruction improves the output.
Become Better at Giving Instructions
Prompt engineering isn't about memorizing hundreds of complicated phrases.
